Globally, fish provides about 3.3 billion people with almost 20% of their average per capita intake of animal protein, and 5.6 billion people with 10% of such protein. Preliminary estimates for 2019 indicate a further growth in per capita consumption to about 20.5 kg, with the share of fish farming (fish farming production) in total available food fish supply overtaking that of capture fisheries (11.1 kg vs 9.5 kg).

Our contribution of fish farming to the total production of aquatic animals from capture and fish farming combined has risen steadily from 39.9% in 2019 to 48.0% in 2022
